Hand Pain

A Hand pain could be caused by various reasons. It could be a disease, an injury, repetitive motion causing wear and tear of tissues. A hand pain needs medical attention when the pain is unrelenting and does not go away.

Symptoms

The symptoms of the hand pain are easily ignored. Though many of the symptoms could be shared by many other medical conditions, the common symptoms are:

  • Swelling
  • Tingling sensation in fingers that cause thinning pain
  • Pain around thumb and index finger
  • Burning and itching sensation with pain
  • Hand Numbness
  • Pain in hand joints

Causes

The various conditions of the hand muscles, bones and tissues could cause hand pain. The common causes are:

  • Injury causing muscle, bone or tissue damages in the hand
  • Osteoporosis causing weak bones
  • Arthritis
  • Infections that could also affect blood vessels
  • Tumors, cysts or boils

Diagnosis

  • A physical examination is conducted by the doctor on the affected hand. The doctors might ask to move the hand in certain angles, direction and positions to understand the pain.

An X-ray could also be recommended to rule out factures or bone injuries.

Other tests like blood test or MRI’s could also be conducted to find-out other conditions that could be causing the pain.

Treatment and Recovery

  • The common remedies that could ease the hand pain are

    • Simple hand exercises like stretches
    • Massaging the area
    • Putting heat pads to relieve pain
    • Inflammation and pain relief medication

A surgery to relive the hand pain is necessary only in conditions that need tissue or bone repair. A hand pain caused due to wear and tear of tissues that is not healing even after non surgical remedies could be treated by surgery as per the doctor’s suggestion after detailed diagnosis. The surgery could involve correction of damaged tissues.

A slight swelling and pain is expected to be experienced after the surgery.

Recovery from some arthritis conditions demand change in food habits as to not consume some kinds of food. This is best suggested by the doctors and physiotherapist.

Physiotherapy and medication is advised after the surgery. This allows the hands muscle to strengthen and prevent stiffness and gain back the lost motion.
